Former Marine Paul Whelan Released from Russian Prison
Russian Prisoner Swap
Paul Whelan, a former US Marine who was detained in Russia for nearly four years, has been released in a prisoner swap.
Whelan, who holds multiple citizenships, was arrested in Moscow in December 2018 on espionage charges. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison the following year.
The United States government has been working to secure Whelan's release since his arrest. President Joe Biden has repeatedly raised the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
On Thursday, the US and Russia agreed to a prisoner swap that would see Whelan released in exchange for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer who was serving a 25-year prison sentence in the United States.
"Our family is grateful to the United States government for making Paul's freedom a reality," Whelan's family said in a statement. "We are overjoyed that Paul is finally free and can come home.
Whelan's release is a major victory for the Biden administration, which has come under pressure to secure the release of Americans detained abroad. It is also a sign that the United States and Russia are willing to cooperate on issues of mutual interest, even amid heightened tensions over Ukraine.
Whelan's release is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope can prevail. He endured nearly four years of imprisonment with dignity and defiance, never giving up hope that he would one day be free.
